History Of Yoga

Hisory of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Rooted in the Indus Valley Civilization, it evolved as a spiritual discipline that aimed to unite the mind, body, and soul. The word “Yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “Yuj”, meaning to join or to unite.

Over the centuries, yoga developed through various schools and philosophies, such as Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (knowledge), Karma Yoga (action), and Raja Yoga (meditation). The fou-ndational text, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, written around 200 BCE, systematized yoga into the Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, including ethical principles, postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, yoga gained international recognition thanks to Indian masters like Swami Vivekananda, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, and B.K.S. Iyengar. Today, yoga is practiced worldwide, blending ancient wisdom with modern wellness to promote inner peace, flexibility, strength, and holistic health.
